How many years have you worked in the industry?

I have been in the industry 11 years including my Co-Op.

What attracted you to the construction industry and what do you enjoy most about your job? 

I have always been interested in design and watching new buildings come to life. As a child, I had Lego, building blocks, and toy construction tools. As I grew up and learned about the industry and career opportunities, I knew it would be a good fit for me. I love being on the jobsite and working with the trades to help a building come to life. It’s always rewarding to solve a constructability issue and help coordinate all aspects of a design, from foundations and structure, to figuring out mechanical and power requirements for different pieces of equipment and building functionality.

Have you had any mentors throughout your career? If so, who were they and how did they help you in your career. 

While I feel I’ve had a handful of mentors throughout the years, I am always actively listening to all in the industry for new thoughts, tricks of the trade, and advice. The industry has a wealth of knowledge, so I think it’s important to learn from a variety of perspectives. My mentors have helped shape my career by being available to talk when working through a tough issue on a jobsite and helping me learn to trust my gut instinct. This has helped me make clearer and more direct decisions as I have grown in my career.

What advice would you give other women that are considering or new to the construction industry? 

I always tell women that are considering careers in construction to go for it and explore aspects of construction they are interested in. There are so many options and different career paths within the industry where any individual can thrive and benefit from the rewards. If they are willing to ask questions, learn, and work hard, they will excel in this industry.

Tell us what you like to do in your free time or give a fun fact about yourself. 

My husband, daughter, and I have joined a pinball league and enjoy going to the arcade and trying out new games. In my first tournament, I placed 5th out of 28 – but looking to get into the top 3. I am also looking for my next half marathon as I have completed at least one a year in the last 6 years.
