Shook Construction

How many years have you worked in the industry? I have been working in the construction industry for roughly 3 years, 2 and a half of which as a Co-op.

What attracted you to the construction industry? Growing up working in the restaurant industry, I grew to love the fast-paced day to day operations. With this, I knew I wanted a full-time career that was also fast paced, fulfilling, and challenging. Construction is just that. Fast paced and every day is different.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love that every day is not the same as the last. Especially in the heat of a job. There are days where I spend 9 out of 10 hours in the field and there are days where I’m in my office all day. In addition, I love the crew that I work with.

What advice would you give other women considering the construction industry? Don’t be afraid of the construction stigma that women can’t make it in a male oriented industry. We need more women in construction. Our perspectives are very different and can have a big impact.

What can be done to attract more women to construction? Since I started in construction, there has already been a change to make the industry more attractive to women. I think the biggest barrier that needs to be broken is the acceptance of women in the field. It’s more of a mental shift than anything.

What do you like to do in your free time? When I am not at work, I love doing anything that pertains to the outside. Most weekends you can find me out fishing or hanging out with friends. I also enjoy keeping up with new TV shows, movies, or playing videos games.
