What brought or attracted you to the construction industry?
I went to a job fair and learned about the trades. I've always enjoyed doing physical work. Being a laborer affords me the opportunity to be a part of every different stage of the construction process. Some projects last a week, some a couple months and others a few years. But each day is something different. You meet and work with so many people, it never gets boring.
What do you like most about your work?
I love the bond we as 310 (Labor Union) have. I gained a second family the day I joined - one that will teach you, support you and make you feel welcome each and every day you walk into work. The comradery is unlike anything I've experienced at any other job. We are all one team and help each other at work and in life to be the best we can be.
What advice would you give to other women interested in construction?
Go to your local job fair or call the hall for details as to when they accept applications. This is a career, not just a job, in which you can comfortably support yourself and your family. There is a company that is looking for you. We all have different strengths, but there is a position for each one of us on the team.
Describe the kinds of opportunities in construction available to women?
There are unlimited opportunities for women in construction! I am treated no differently than a man once I punch that clock. We all have a job to do and we help each other to get it done. If you want to grow within a company, there is plenty of room for that. There are many women who run work. You can travel, work nights, stay for overtime, or simply put in your 40 hours and be home in time for dinner and homework every night.
