The Cleveland City Planning Commission on Friday approved the demolition of four houses and a building in the city’s Kinsman neighborhood to make way for the police department’s new headquarters.

Commissioners took the action on the properties along Grand Avenue during a virtual meeting. The votes mark another step forward as it works to move its headquarters from the downtown Justice Center in downtown Cleveland to the city’s East Side.

The city in 2019 announced its intentions to build the new police headquarters complex on the in-progress Opportunity Corridor Boulevard, where Grand Avenue and East 75th Street now intersect near Orlando Baking Co.’s headquarters. In addition to the headquarters building, there also will be other buildings on site for vehicles and storage.

Work on the Opportunity Corridor, a long-awaited new boulevard linking Interstate 77 to University Circle, is expected to finish next year. Designs for the new building are expected this year, so construction can begin by late 2021 and finish by 2023.
