Tell us about your company.
We are a family-owned industrial contractor that provides heavy hauling, rigging, and machinery maintenance/repair services. We also undertake a variety of specialized custom construction projects.
What are the favorite part(s) of your job and why?
Since we have only a few people working each day in the office, we each take on several responsibilities. My favorite job is answering the phones and talking to our customers. Having communication with the customers as well as our office staff keeps me informed on what’s going on day-to-day. I love sharing our long work history in Cleveland (to anyone who will listen to me). I am sincerely proud of our history and the talent of our employees. Many people might find it unusual that the company is now in its 5th generation of Norris ownership. What I find even more unique is that we have employees who are 4th and 5th generation as well.
What has been the key to your company's success thus far?
Our employees take much pride in their work. Our union workers understand the value of their work, and they have great respect for the hazards involved. We provide a service that is hard to find. One of our employees describes our work as “moving the impossible every day.”
What important changes/initiatives are you working on now?
We are looking for the right people to join our team and are seeking to fill positions in the field, office, and sales areas.
How has Norris Brothers benefited from its CEA membership?
Getting to know and building relationships with other contractors in our area has been an asset for Norris Brothers. Norris Brothers is a unique contractor. In many cases, we are not competing with other contractors but assist them by providing services to help complete their projects effectively and safely. Both CAA (Contractors Assistance Association) and CEA provide a number of educational activities and industry events that provide growth opportunities, in business and personal development.
What is the importance of mentoring and inclusion? If you had/have a mentor who was it and what value did it provide you/your company?
Inclusion and diversity in the workplace create the foundation for an adaptable, creative, and talented workforce. Sharing ideas and talents from all employees will only benefit an organization. Different opinions and a good mix of diversity is healthy for all. Having a project with a common goal gives the group unity. Having mutual respect and understanding of coworkers makes for a good work environment. Now that we are more relaxed with covid restrictions, I am looking forward to developing better relationships with other female business owners.
How do Norris Brothers find and retain talent?
We have been very fortunate that many of our employees have been with us for many years. I truly believe it is because we are a good place to work. I also believe that our employees find a sense of pride and satisfaction in their work. I enjoy coming in to work in the mornings and my wish for them is the same.
What would you say to someone at the beginning of their career in construction?
I classify myself as someone just starting a career in construction. My words of encouragement to myself: “Put a smile on my face and keep my eyes and ears open to all suggestions and advice. Do not be afraid to make mistakes.” I have learned the most in life by making mistakes. The past three years have been very educational for me and I look forward to the challenges ahead.
