Cleveland Plans to Demolish Eagle Avenue Bridge in the Flats, Seeks Public Comment

The Eagle Avenue Bridge, one of several iconic structures that cross Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River, may be demolished next summer because of how badly it has deteriorated.

In an online presentation, the city of Cleveland said demolition is the best option for the bridge. City officials looked at several other options, like stabilizing the bridge, making it operational or moving it and repurposing it somewhere else — but found that the cost was too high for every other alternative.

When it was operational, the bridge connected Ontario Street and the Scranton Peninsula. Because it’s a historic structure, the city and Ohio Department of Transportation must go through a specific public comment process outlined in federal law. The project is taking public comments through July 14.
