Women in Construction: Tara Lindholm
As a part of Women in Construction (WIC) week, March 4-10, 2018, we are highlighting the contributions of local women in the industry. The following interview is with Tara Lindholm, Project Engineer at Turner Construction and President of NAWIC Cleveland, who has worked in the construction industry for 8 years.
How did you begin your career?
I started out in Chemical Engineering and I was really struggling with my classes during my 2nd year of college. One of the Associate Deans introduced me to some of the professors and department heads in each of the engineering disciplines. I learned that civil engineers were usually involved with more public projects, worked on project teams, and often held management positions in either deisgn or construction. That's when I switched my major to Civil Engineering.
What attracted you to the construction industry?
University of Akron has a great co-op program. I was fortunate to complete 4 co-op semesters with a general contractor, Crowder Construction. I spent 2 semesters in Raleigh, NC and 2 semesters in Atlanta, GA. During the co-ops, I realized I wanted a career in construction management. I had my eyes on Turner Construction before I graduated, and so I was excited to accept a position as Project Engineer in their Cleveland office.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love the people I work with! I have met many good friends throughout my career. I also love the challenges that come with all of the unique projects that I have been involved with. I learn something new every day.
Best advice:
If you have a specific goal, position, or project that you want to be involved with, SPEAK UP and tell your supervisor. Don't just wait for a good opportunity to fall in your lap.
Best experience:
Working for a challenging client where I learned so much. The owner's representative that I reported to "told it like it is." When I did a great job, he made it known. When I did not follow through, he called me out and gave me advice. I've learned to appreciate that kind of feedback because it pushed me to new limits.
