On Monday, September 14, Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday signed legislation to temporarily give businesses, health-care workers and schools legal immunity from coronavirus-related lawsuits.
A recent survey by the Ohio chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business found that 70% of entrepreneurs in the state are fearful of such a lawsuit, according to an NFIB-Ohio release.
General Legislative Overview
This fall, voters will once again have access to all of Ohio’s normal options for casting a ballot: early in-person voting, absentee voting, and convenient in-person voting on Election Day. However, it would be naïve to say this will be a normal election. The Ohio Secretary of State and our bipartisan boards of elections are working overtime to ensure a secure, accessible and safe election for every voter – but they cannot do it alone.
AGC of America made sure construction work was classified as essential in most parts of the country during the coronavirus pandemic. Despite early calls to halt most forms of construction, we were able to push back by successfully making the case the industry has a proven track record of complying with complex safety rules; most construction happens outdoors with good air circulation; and the industry was accustomed to wearing personal protection equipment like masks.
At the time of writing this update, the Ohio Senate has a couple session days slated for mid August, while the Ohio House has session dates set for a September return. With each passing day, the focus also turns to elections as the entire Ohio House is up for reelection and approximately half of the Ohio Senate.
