What attracted you to the construction industry and what do you enjoy most about your job? 

Originally, the building and creating, the change of scenery and being able to work with my hands and seeing the fruits of my labor. The accomplishment and satisfaction of seeing from start to finish the progress of what is being built and constructed, knowing it will be a part of the skyline and history for many years to come. I now enjoy being part of procuring jobs and aiding in the planning of the beginning stages of construction.

Have you had any mentors throughout your career? If so, who were they and how did they help you in your career. 

I have been fortunate to have quite a few mentors in every aspect and area of my career from just starting out as an apprentice, to becoming a journeyman , steward, foreman, officer of the local, fabricating steel and becoming an estimator. They have shown me the ropes, offered support, tutelage, guidance, given opportunity and support along the way.

What advice would you give other women that are considering or new to the construction industry? 

I would say to go for it, give it a shot. It can be very rewarding and you get out what you put in. It's hard work and working out in the elements working under pressure and staying on schedule can be challenging requiring internal fortitude and a good work ethic.
Getting into a union apprenticeship program provides excellent training, benefits and support as well as great experience. Finding a mentor or at least a few peers to have as a support system is key I would say. There are endless opportunities depending on your goals or ambitions from working with the tools in the field, to working within the union as an instructor or officer, to furthering your education or degree and going into the office and management side of things to even possibly starting your own business.

Tell us what you like to do in your free time or give a fun fact about yourself. 

I enjoy volunteering through church and helping others, spending time with family and friends, traveling, cooking, working out, motorcycling, reading and always striving to further my education and expand my knowledge.
